If the true story that inspired this blog was a movie, it would be as adventure-filled as all the Indiana Jones flicks combined; packed with Hitchcockian twists; and would take the viewer on a breathtaking ride from dark, suffocating pits in the ground to the throne room of the most powerful monarch in the world. Plus, it would have a moment of utter nerve-wracking tension to match the best Tarantino set-ups.
Unfortunately (or fortunately, if you're listening Netflix), that movie hasn't been made. But you can read the full story in the provided link at the end of this post.
For today, I am here to recite my near-brush with possibly the most stunning uncut diamond in the history of mankind - The Cullinan
Back To Mine
On the 21st of January 2021, I found myself standing in a room in a building where, over a century ago, a man named Joseph Asscher attempted to split the world's largest uncut diamond. The moment when Asscher's hammer hit the end of a knife wedged in a tiny cut made on the surface of the diamond was the culmination of a legendary journey of the heart-sized Cullinan diamond.
The tale begins in a South African mine where soon after its discovery, the Cullinan is shipped to England as a gift to King Edward VII, ruler of the great and mighty British Empire. The monarch wanted to initially leave the diamond uncut but was persuaded otherwise by both Winston Churchill and Joseph Asscher (the world's most renowned diamond cutter at the time). Consequently, Joseph Asscher was entrusted with cutting the Cullinan, the most valuable raw gemstone ever discovered!
On His Majesty's Precious Service
With the weight of King Edward's expectations on his shoulders plus the fact that one tiny cutting mistake would render the priceless raw diamond worthless, Joseph Asscher concocted a blueprint to split the Cullinan. This masterplan began with an ingenious method of getting the diamond from London to Asscher's facility in Amsterdam's diamond district without getting ambushed by the press or worse, those with ill intent. Once the Cullinan's relocation was successfully pulled off, the first cut commenced - which if successful, would perfectly split the raw diamond, revealing the many-sized individual treasures inside that could be further separated, cut, polished, then unveiled in all their brilliant glory.
Pause. Rewind.
Remember, I mentioned Tarantino tensions and Hitchcock twists? Remember, I mentioned the moment Joseph Asscher's hammer hit the edge of a knife wedged into a tiny cut made on the surface of the Cullinan? Well, we've arrived at that moment suprême!
On the 10th of February 1908, the world's largest precious raw diamond owned by the ruler of the world's largest empire and entrusted to the world's most renowned diamond cutter sat mounted in rock-solid clay awaiting the hammer blow that would perfectly split it in two. Except, the Cullinan decided to ignore Joseph Asscher's script!
Then what?!
I'm going to let you discover what happened next from the Asscher Family's own website where this unbelievable story is charted in delightful detail.
I'm no sadist so I will tell you this - two of the Cullinan's largest diamonds take pride of place in the annals of British Monarchy - with the Great Star Of Africa set in the Sovereign's Sceptre with Cross, and the Smaller Star Of Africa in the Imperial Crown itself! So yes, that first attempt to split the Cullinan was not a disaster but merely a hiccup. Joseph Asscher and his family eventually cut over one hundred diamonds from the Cullinan for King Edward VII that today form part of Queen Elisabeth II's private collection.
Onwards & Upwards
The Cullinan adventure cemented the Asscher Family's reputation as the go-to diamond cutters for the most precious jewels (and greatest jewellers) in the world. They count royalty, celebrities, and diamond lovers from all corners of the globe as their clients. And have the distinction of establishing a patented cut (the Asscher Cut) that is part of today's diamond vernacular. What makes the Asscher story truly exceptional is that the 6th generation, siblings Lita and Mike Asscher, sit at the company's helm today, ensuring the Royal Asscher brand maintains its heritage and history while elegantly evolving into the future.
A brush with brilliance
If you're asking how I embedded myself into the Asscher's incredible story, well let me take you back to the 21st of January 2021 when I found myself standing in a room in the Asscher building from where the family's been running their business for generations. That room houses a display cabinet in which lies a torch-shaped wooden apparatus with a cup-like receptacle at one end. It looks somewhat like the Olympic Torch. In the cup was a hollowed-out irregularly shaped hole in a hardened brownish grey substance.
Lita Asscher took the wooden item out and explained that it was the mount holding the Cullinan when her ancestor Joseph Asscher successfully split it on his 2nd attempt! As I stared at this object that housed a rock touched by the hands of historical rulers, politicians, and craftsmen, I was mesmerised. Lita Asscher noticed the same. So she asked, "Would you like to touch it?" I replied a resounding and immediate, "YES!"
Then by a single degree of separation, I went on to touch the largest uncut diamond in history. And the experience felt, priceless.

Als het ware verhaal dat deze blog inspireerde een film was, zou het net zo avontuurlijk zijn als alle Indiana Jones-films bij elkaar; vol met Hitchcockiaanse avonturen. Het zou de toeschouwer meenemen op een adembenemende rit van donkere bossen naar de troonzaal van de machtigste monarch ter wereld. Bovendien zou het op een moment uiterst zenuwslopend zijn, wat past bij de beste Tarantino-werken.

Terug naar mijn verhaal
Op 21 januari 2021 bevond ik me in een kamer in een gebouw waar meer dan een eeuw geleden een man genaamd Joseph Asscher probeerde 's werelds grootste ongeslepen diamant te splijten. Het moment waarop de hamer van Asscher het uiteinde van een mes raakte dat was ingeklemd in een kleine snede gemaakt op het oppervlak van de diamant, was het hoogtepunt van een legendarische reis van de hartvormige Cullinan-diamant.
Het verhaal begint in een Zuid-Afrikaanse mijn. Kort na zijn ontdekking werd de Cullinan naar Engeland gebracht als een geschenk aan koning Edward VII, heerser van het grote en machtige Britse rijk. De vorst wilde de diamant aanvankelijk ongeslepen laten, maar werd overgehaald door zowel Winston Churchill als Joseph Asscher (destijds de meest gerenommeerde diamantslijper ter wereld). Daarom werd Joseph Asscher belast met het slijpen van de Cullinan, de meest waardevolle ruwe edelsteen ooit ontdekt!
In kostbare dienst van Zijne Majesteit
Met het gewicht van de verwachtingen van koning Edward op zijn schouders plus het feit dat een kleine snijfout de onschatbare ruwe diamant waardeloos zou maken, maakte Joseph Asscher een blauwdruk om de Cullinan te splijten. Dit meesterlijke plan begon met een ingenieuze methode om de diamant van Londen naar Asscher's faciliteit in de Amsterdamse diamantwijk te vervoeren zonder in een hinderlaag te worden gelokt door de pers of erger nog, mensen met slechte bedoelingen. Nadat het transport van de Cullinan met succes was voltooid, begon Asscher met de eerste snede - die, indien succesvol, de ruwe diamant perfect zou splijten om vervolgens de schitterende glorie te kunnen onthullen.
Pauze. Terugspoelen.
Weet je nog dat ik het verhaal begon met Tarantino-spanningen en Hitchcock-wendingen? Weet je nog dat ik het had over het moment dat de hamer van Joseph Asscher de rand van een mes raakte dat in een kleine snee in het oppervlak van de Cullinan was geklemd? Nou, we zijn op het moment suprême aangekomen!
Op 10 februari 1908 zat 's werelds grootste kostbare ruwe diamant, die eigendom was van de heerser van 's werelds grootste rijk en was toevertrouwd aan 's werelds meest gerenommeerde diamantslijper, gemonteerd in rotsvaste klei in afwachting van de hamerslag die de diamant perfect in tweeën zou splijten. Maar toen besloot de Cullinan het script van Joseph Asscher te negeren!
En toen?!
Ik neem je mee naar de gebeurtenis die hierna volgde vanaf de eigen website van de familie Asscher, waar dit ongelooflijke verhaal tot in de kleinste details in kaart is gebracht.
Ik ben geen sadist, dus ik zal je dit vertellen - twee van de grootste diamanten van de Cullinan nemen een prominente plaats in de Britse monarchie - met de Great Star Of Africa in de Sovereign’s Sceptre en de Smaller Star Of Africa in de keizerlijke kroon! Dus ja, die eerste poging om de Cullinan te splijten was geen ramp, maar slechts een probleempje. Joseph Asscher en zijn familie splijten uiteindelijk meer dan honderd diamanten uit de Cullinan voor koning Edward VII, die vandaag deel uitmaken van de privécollectie van Koningin Elisabeth II.
Voorwaarts & Omhoog
Het avontuur van de Cullinan versterkte de reputatie van de familie Asscher als dé diamantslijper voor de kostbaarste juwelen (en grootste juweliers) ter wereld. Ze rekenen royalty's, beroemdheden en diamantliefhebbers uit alle hoeken van de wereld tot hun klantenkring. Royal Asscher maakt onderscheid met een gepatenteerde slijpvorm (de Asscher Cut) die deel uitmaakt van de hedendaagse diamanttaal. Wat het Asscher-verhaal echt uitzonderlijk maakt, is dat de 6e generatie, broer en zus Lita en Mike Asscher, aan het roer van het bedrijf zitten. Zij zorgen er vandaag de dag voor dat het merk Royal Asscher erfgoed en geschiedenis behoudt en tegelijkertijd elegant evolueert naar de toekomst.
Een penseel met glans
Als je jezelf afvraagt hoe ik in aanraking ben gekomen met het ongelooflijke verhaal van Asscher, laat me je dan meenemen naar 21 januari 2021, toen ik mij bevond in een kamer in het Asscher-gebouw waaruit de familie al generaties lang hun bedrijf runt. Die kamer herbergt een vitrinekast waarin een fakkelvormig houten apparaat staat met aan het uiteinde een kommetje. Het lijkt een beetje op de Olympische fakkel. In het kommetje zat een uitgehold onregelmatig gevormd gat in een geharde bruingrijze substantie.
Lita Asscher haalde het houten voorwerp tevoorschijn en legde uit dat het de kwast was waarin de Cullinan werd geplaatst toen haar voorvader Joseph Asscher de Cullinan met succes spleet bij zijn tweede poging. Toen ik naar dit object staarde dat ooit de steen vasthield die was aangeraakt door de handen van historische heersers, politici en ambachtslieden, was ik gefascineerd. Lita Asscher merkte hetzelfde op, dus vroeg zij mij: 'Zou je het willen aanraken?' Ik antwoordde volmondig en onmiddellijk: "JA!"
Vervolgens raakte ik bescheiden op eerste graad afstand de grootste ongeslepen diamant in de geschiedenis aan. En de ervaring voelde, onbetaalbaar!
